Figuring things out as I go

OCTOBER 20, 2026 · 5 MIN READ · JOE AGLER

Starting a business is both exciting and scary at the same time. Without starting, you can’t get to where you’re aiming to go. It’s a constant back and forth with yourself on what to work on and what will actually provide value to others while also bringing in money to sustain the business. Money talks. Figuring out what to actually focus on is brutal as a business owner. I’ve lost count how many times I’ve wanted to quit but I’m still here chugging along.

TLDR: Starting a business, various things I’m working on, and spelling out the long-term intent for others while being open to new ideas. Basically slowly but surely manifesting things. Businesses are hard; shocker.

For the last 10+ years I’ve been working in the Privileged Access Management space of IT Security. A big part of it has ranged from performing operations related items, supporting various IT Security applications, engineering solutions between applications, and doing architecture and related reviews, etc.

I had been following along with TCM-Sec Academy’s (https://tcm-sec.com/academy/) journey as they built out their training side of their business, and that inspired me start blogging on various Idira (CyberArk) items. I did pitch a course for them and they liked it, however I didn’t follow-through. I had built the demo slides and recordings for the pitch, but I didn’t really know where to begin after that. However, I had created a pretty good doc with the content that I would use and that took a while… and then during cleanup of files a during a lull in working on it, I accidently deleted it somehow. Which I then promptly threw away the course idea as I had already spent a f*ck ton of time on it. It was defeating and caused me not to want to recreate it as this was a hobby at the time. The aim was to create the course content then record the video and voiceovers after that next. Not to mention I had no idea what video recording application to use, etc.

Expanded offerings — The new hotness

I landed my first contract with Devolutions by literally being at the end of my rope on what to do with my new business, and posting on Twitter about it. That ongoing collaboration with Devolutions alone has made me want to continue working on my business. Shout out to Marc-André Moreau and the Devolutions team for being awesome to work with! Devolutions integrates with CyberArk but also can be deployed separately alone for other use-cases as well like Remote Desktop Management (RDM), PAM, Gateway, etc. A win-win. I’m a reseller so hit me up if you’re interested in Devolutions items.

Web re-design #100?

After a while the only thing I could control was updating my website. It looked like total sh*t at launch but it’s now in a better spot in my opinion. Ironically though each time I thought the same. I know updating my website isn’t helping any to secure possible clients, ask my empty mailbox. It’s something I can easily control and update over time vs doing outreach, etc. The aim is creating warm leads vs me spending time being a LinkedIn lunatic, spam AI sh*t, spending $ on ads, but also to provide helpful content to peers in the Idira (CyberArk), IT Security and PAM space as a whole. I haven’t been doing a lot of outreach as I want to be genuine in not throwing out spam and being annoying AF.

Finding my niche(s) — “Help me, help you”

As I started growing the list of partners I was going to work with, I asked myself how could I add value to those partners’ users and clients. Basically, what packaged “thing” would be worth paying for and could help build trust with potential PAM clients to work on other PAM items. The items I have in mind and I am working towards offering are below.

PrivilegeFlow — An enhanced Idira (CyberArk) ServiceNow ticket integration. Having previously given a CyberArk talk at Impact 2025 about the out of the box ServiceNow Ticket integration and the lack of features and options, I decided there had to be a better way. I’m close to having this ready to be sold as an offering… I just need to retest and validate things… again… then package it up. Look at more information about PrivilegeFlow here and join the waitlist — https://www.keyvaultsolutions.com/pages/privilegeflow .

  • KeyVault Sync — a product similar to Idira (CyberArk) Secrets Hub, which has more control and flexibility in syncing credentials from CyberArk to Azure Key Vault (AKV) secrets. Also, auto-onboarding your discovered AKV secrets into your CyberArk Vault is supported. Here’s the KeyVault Sync MVP Demo. Join the waitlist by contacting me — https://www.keyvaultsolutions.com/pages/contact-us .

It’s still a work in progress, but if you like what you see and want to be an early adopter, contact us and you can help shape things.

  • Idira (Cyberark) managed service provider …most places that have Idira end up with an expensive password vault and that’s it. Have our team handle things for you in getting more value out of your PAM program. Just like IAM, PAM never ends.

  • ServiceNow automation to process your CyberArk workflows — A packaged way to request routine CyberArk services and streamline the operational overhead.

Courses, eventually

This will take me a while, but a main idea I’ve wanted to do is creating various courses for Idira (CyberArk), but also for the other resellers I’m involved with, such as Devolutions, HYDDEN, and Delinea. While AI is the new craze, I still keep coming back to people still needing a structured experience in order to learn. If you refer to Heath Adams’ recent LinkedIn newsletters, it indicates during the TCM Security startup phase, they quickly realized they were would become mainly a training company. I keep thinking that I could do both products and training… but I really should choose one to focus on if I’m being honest with myself. AI has me going back and forth though on the right move.

  • Create quality structured courses

  • Create my own certifications based on my created courses. Yeah, I know, I must be insane.

  • Sell direct to consumer with the intent of getting new people into IT Security and/or the PAM space specifically

  • Sell a monthly subscription that includes the courses, a community, and ideally provide related labs.
